Dolly Parton: ‘I’m happy to be second in line’ to Christmas ‘queen’ Mariah Carey

She may be the “Queen of Country,” but when it comes to Christmas, Dolly Parton is just fine giving up the queen title.

It’s known that the singer-songwriter has a huge love for Christmas — but when presented with the thought that she might be the new royal of the holiday, she quickly shut it down.

“Now, don’t you say that! I’m not going to compete with Mariah (Carey),” Parton, 76, said in her new cover story for Better Homes & Gardens

“I love her. You think of Christmas, you think of Mariah. I’m happy to be second in line to her.”

Last year, Carey, 52, filed to trademark the “Queen of Christmas” nickname.

Though Carey might officially be the holiday’s monarch, Parton always works a lot during this time of year — certainly making her Christmas royalty.

She recently re-released her Christmas album, “A Holly Dolly Christmas,” with eight additional tracks, including a duet with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus. Parton even previously covered Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” with Jimmy Fallon.

“Me and Jimmy, we have a great chemistry,” she shared. “We both feel it, and we love it.”

On top of “A Holly Dolly Christmas,” the singer has two other Christmas albums: 1984’s “Once Upon a Christmas” with Kenny Rogers and 1990’s “Home for Christmas.”

Dollywood, Parton’s Tennessee theme park, also goes all out for the holiday — with millions of lights as part of its Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration every year.

Parton also has four Christmas-centric films and is releasing a fifth: “A Country Christmas Story” (2013), “Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love” (2016), “Christmas at Dollywood” (2019) and “Christmas on the Square” (2020). Her upcoming holiday movie, “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas,” is set for release Dec. 1 on NBC, and stars Miley’s dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as Fallon.

“The holidays make me very creative ’cause I’m happy. And I try to remember, and I draw from that, from that spirit of Christmas. That Christ spirit,” Parton told Better Homes & Gardens. “Even if you don’t believe in Jesus, the spirit is really about giving and tolerance, understanding and acceptance.”
